Dr. Liz Nissim provides comprehensive psychological evaluations for guardianship matters involving young adults and adults who may require additional support in managing their personal, medical, educational, financial, or daily living needs. These evaluations are often conducted for individuals approaching the age of 18 or those who have reached adulthood and whose developmental, cognitive, physical, or adaptive functioning may impact their ability to independently care for themselves or make certain decisions.
A guardianship evaluation is designed to provide an objective assessment of an individual's current abilities, strengths, limitations, and support needs. The evaluation examines multiple areas of functioning, including intellectual abilities, reasoning and problem-solving skills, judgment, decision-making abilities, adaptive functioning, and the individual's capacity to manage everyday responsibilities.
The evaluation may include a comprehensive review of developmental, medical, educational, and psychological history; interviews with the individual and relevant caregivers or collateral sources; observations of functioning; and psychological assessment measures when appropriate. Areas assessed may include:
Cognitive and Intellectual Functioning: Evaluation of intellectual abilities, learning capacity, reasoning skills, comprehension, memory, and problem-solving abilities.
Adaptive Functioning and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Assessment of an individual's ability to independently manage daily responsibilities, including personal hygiene, dressing, eating, medication management, transportation, household tasks, safety awareness, and navigating community settings.
Executive Functioning and Decision-Making: Evaluation of skills related to planning, organization, impulse control, understanding consequences, financial judgment, and the ability to make informed decisions.
Communication and Social Functioning: Assessment of the individual's ability to understand information, communicate needs, advocate for themselves, and engage appropriately with others.
Physical and Functional Abilities: Consideration of how medical, developmental, or physical limitations may affect independence and the ability to complete daily tasks safely.
The purpose of a guardianship evaluation is not to focus solely on limitations, but rather to provide a balanced understanding of an individual's abilities and the level of support needed to maximize independence, safety, and quality of life. The evaluation may help inform decisions regarding whether guardianship, supported decision-making, or other protective supports may be appropriate.
Dr. Nissim recognizes that many young adults with developmental, cognitive, medical, or emotional challenges are capable of meaningful participation in their own lives when provided with the appropriate level of support. Evaluations are individualized and designed to provide families, attorneys, and courts with objective information regarding an individual's functional abilities and support needs as they transition into adulthood.
